Africa has the lowest cigarette taxes of any region. Price data are needed to produce evidence that informs tax policy change. Objective To locate and describe datasets that provide information on cigarette prices in African countries and to identify opportunities for expanding the region’s cigarette price information base.

UN Trade and Development’s (UNCTAD) Economic Development in Africa Report 2024 highlights how economies face heightened uncertainty during major shocks, including the 2008 financial crisis, the 2014 commodity price collapse and COVID-19.
